Social media Marketing Sucks. Especially Facebook!

Social media Marketing Sucks

This article is written on personal opinion found in evidence, testimonials & statements on the current state of security on the world wide web?

Thinking of a $20-$100 social media Facebook campaign? I am Ashton Deroy former sales rep, social media marketer & SEO writer. At one time I would have encouraged you to take out a campaign with me to help boost your sales, brand awareness & gain attention to a message.

This was before I started investigating why Facebook advertising doesn’t work, why they use artificial metrics & how Facebook has done very little to drive sales to campaigns I have been involved in.

Meet DocahBear, On January 21st, 2017 he published a video on a Facebook campaign he had run with a $30 credit he had been given by Facebook. In this video, he discusses how Facebook not only gave him a bill beyond his desired budget but how Facebook had messed with his ad, cost him peek advertising times & delivered false metrics based on Facebook using a poorly set-up counter to calculate conversion & views. (The industry is begging Facebook to change!)

Did you know 3 seconds counts as a view on Facebook? However on YouTube you need to watch for 30 seconds to be counted as a view.

What is click fraud and how to prevent it? This was published by ClickFrauds on YouTube January 12th 2017. The video shows that there is a massive hole in the digital marketing industry when it comes to bot driven Key performance indicators (KPI) , how bots are costing ad buyers money & how to prevent it. My impression of this video upon seeing it was when a campaign can be 98% bot views, Google & Facebook is not doing enough to address the issue!

This was published by White Ops July 10th 2015, unlike the other two videos, this was published two years ago. Proving that advertising fraud on Google and Facebook was brought to the companies attention a long time ago. in this video, Michael Tiffany talks about how click fraud needs to be made less profitable and how his company can help. Don’t get me wrong this was made to boost the reputation of an online security company but he brings up alarming statistics about fraud click advertising and how Google, Facebook & Publisher websites are affected.

Ashton Deroy’s Personal testimony: I have probably spent $200 over my time running a social media marketing business to try & create conversions through Facebook. I have sold to one client an amount that wasn’t nearly enough to cover my initial investments. I only had 3 inbound leads & for whatever reason, those deals could not be completed.

Personally, I have seen telemarketing, Email Marketing, & Door to door sales be far more effective than digital advertising! That is right I am actually telling people to go back to the basics. Send messages where people are on the other end to receive them, & build your brand based on person to person engagement. As a sidebar, I tried to engage with 5 ads yesterday through Facebook and no one responded or served me.  Proving that using Facebook for the engagement your brand seeks, does not quite pay off when you use it wrong! People are more persuasive than content.

One of the questions was “What does your brand even do?”

My old rule was, unless they benefit you for free! Why would you pay to market on them? So far WordPress & Google still meet that criteria & Facebook dropped the ball.

Got a question about Social media Marketing? Send me an Email below, maybe I can keep you from wasting your money!

I also ordered some new boxing gloves on Amazon.ca , despite my disinterest with the website related to their “Pay to sell” format. I just needed to acquire the gloves for my Tuesday Kickboxing classes at Seneca Newnham Campus.

I am moving my return to Facebook back until after the Seneca Teacher strike is completed since I really haven’t had any work on social media in quite some time. However readers, friends & family can still reach out to me through Whatsapp. My phone number is 647-850-6802.

What does film tell us about politics?

Watch Last King of Scotland on Google Play

Ashton Deroy Writes: Film is an art-form by which we can reflect life, society & power. Often in film we look at power dynamics of different forms of government. Whether this government is a democracy, a dictatorship or Monarchy. Film allows us to examine the forum of government as an art.

Side note: The Last King of Scotland is an absolutely atrocious film, I do not believe it captures Idi Amin correctly as a sociopath & a proven serial killer. If someone such as the doctor portrayed in the film had done something to personally insult him, if he had gotten ahold of that person he would of personally killed them. No way he would of gotten away.

When looking at the Last King Of Scotland what can this film tell the viewer about Politics in Uganda? Well the movie is really a creative retelling of Idi Amin a ruthless, delusional & eccentric dictator who was responsible for the slaughter of 500,000 people. What this film can really teach about politics? Well it teaches that is dangerous when there is no limitation placed on leadership. Idi Amin was supposed to restore democracy to Uganda but with his massive unchecked power he was able to to keep his power to himself from 1971-1979.

Idi Amin’s unchecked power could go back as far as his military days. From when he served as a soldier and was accused of using excessive force on missions. This was followed by his ruthless overthrow of the government. Then systematic killings of Milton Obote supporters, Israeli people and throwing Asians out of the country of Uganda.

The film in a way misrepresents the public’s reaction to Amin. The feeling in general towards him was not being beloved by the public. There was dancing in the street when he had taken over. However History.com mentions the public coining the phrase Aminism referring to the brutal enforcement of law &  massacres ordered by Idi Amin. There are stories of him dragging women out of post-secondary schools from certain tribes. It was these atrocities which really have him considered the worst dictator of this century. Not just by outside observation but by many Ugandan people to.

The film allowed us to see a film portrayal of how Idi Amin treated his wives, how his regime was one of terror. However what it didn’t show enough of was the cannibalism, the grotesque display of bodies on the street & the spill of blood for political gain. There was no limitation of Idi Amin’s power in Uganda for his 8 year leadership, until the failed invasion of Tanzania. In the film you got to see the Doctor as a possible power check with the assignment of his assassination. However with the refusal to do the do the job there was no limitation placed on Idi Amin. Which proves the danger of limitless power in a government.

It captures the eccentric behavior, self appointed titles & his death. Unlike the film it does highlight on any public enthusiasm about his new leadership, in fact he had a developed reputation for capturing and torturing people. It also highlights Amin’s use of excessive force, the staged coo and takeover of Uganda. This biography also highlights his estimated kill count of over 500,000.

“Idi Amin: Violent Ugandan President – Fast Facts | History.” History.com, 16 Mar. 2016, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvVIkXPvp-4. Accessed 24 Sept. 2017. This documentary discusses the brutal dictator Idi Amin. It covers his journey from being a cook, to a soldier & the development of his bad reputation. It covers the attack of King Baganda during his military career ordered by the prime minister. Then the coo staged Idi Amin to Milton Obote that started off non-violent, but would turn violent towards Milton Obote’s supporters. This article can help to prove that Idi Amin had unchecked power because in modern North American military someone who tortured prisoners and used excessive force would be held accountable.

Is religion still interfering with my Human rights?

Faith vs Human rights.png

Written by Ashton Deroy: Most times if someone brought this topic to my attention, religion versus gay rights. I would shrug it off & say you can have some of the traditions with religion while simultaneously respecting the rights of others. My grandma is a great example of a woman who reads the bible, says grace before meals & loves her openly gay grandsons. However, since moving to Toronto I’ve began noticing that usually where you see religion here, you do not see the same kind of tolerance that I used to see at home. You can see this in publishing with Eugene Peterson a pastor who had his publication on Bible interpretation removed from a book store, Religious activism in Toronto & all of the discreet gay/bisexual men in the city.

First off Eugene Peterson, the pastor who published his interpretations of the bible and said he would perform a same sex marriage is a classic example of religion not upholding the country’s values for human rights. All he had to do was speak publicly about the fact that he would perform a same-sex marriage to a public forum, then the Christian conservative community was refusing to sell his books & questioning whether they should read his words at all. It is a three year education to become a pastor, after which you appear before a congregation that approves you. Should the fact that the man expresses a socially Liberal opinion in Canada, 2017 really remove his value in his community? The second part to this story is that it is kind of hard to believe you can still take heat in Toronto for being an LGBT ally.  What does this interfere with? Well choosing your religion as a public LGBT individual is still a challenge & gaining access to a religious sales channel or business institution is also still a challenge.

Despite the time we live in, & the socially Liberal culture we live in here in Toronto. It still isn’t unusual to see something like this going around!

anti LGBT remarks.jpg

The last thing is with the dating community of Toronto you still see a lot of in the closet discreet Gay & Bisexual men. When you ask 2/3 of them why they are in the closet what do you get? One person says “most of the time you are going to get from most of them that they are from religious families that condemn same sex relationships.” So rather than cut ties with their family they choose to live discreetly and rather unhappy to avoid losing family ties, financial support or even love in some cases!  What does this do? Well this becomes a hurdle to me a gay man looking to have an open, honest same sex relationship, which is one of my rights.

Image result for Toronto Jewish LGBT

Now it isn’t all bad in the religion versus human rights argument. Toronto has a massive presence with pro-LGBT Jewish people who frequently make public statements of acceptance & love. Many of these people even share stories of LGBT relatives & how their faith adapts to LGBT rights. So while Christianity can sometimes seem a bit too conservative you can see Jewish people are much more left socially.

Yes it does look like in 2017 in Toronto Ontario Canada. Religion does still step on my rights as a gay man & forces many men to hide in the closet. However I think the Jewish Canadians can lead the way in practicing religion with acceptance and forming more open institutions.

Bad things happen once again for a religious pastor who went public backing same sex marriage. This article published July 2017 tells Eugene Peterson story of having his book removed from religious bookstores because he said publicly that when he was a pastor he would perform a same sex marriage. The incident has now had his book The Message removed from right wing religious bookstores & has people asking in the religious Christian community, should we be reading Eugene Peterson books?

3 things that are a waste of money for under motivated people.

3 things that are a waste of money.jpg

Written by Ashton Deroy: The worst thing I hear people express is “I am too lazy to do that.” It is especially concerning when these people move in to commitments, spending money & setting up goals. If you are one of those people who think it is a miracle just because you got out of bed this morning, then this blog probably can save you a lot of pains in the A**. Here are some things for you to avoid spending your $$$ on dumb***!

Gym Memberships

Goodlife fitness.png

The nature of a gym membership is you pay a bi-weekly fee to gain access to a gym, their services and exercise equipment. Anyone who works in this industry will tell you the fitness life style starts in their facilities! “What a load of crap!?!” You don’t pay for the gym membership and magically become motivated to workout.

Deadly Appeal: Sales reps act like a gym membership is a cure for obesity & laziness.

When I had one of these memberships it was literally because working out at home after work would wake my entire house up. Exercise begins with self-management. Doing push ups, sit ups, squats and yoga. All of which you can do aided by a video, not expensive gym equipment. If you can’t even hit play on an exercise video though… Don’t bother with the gym membership!

Avoiding this will save you about $70 a month or a $100 cancellation fee.

Home businesses

Amazon logo.jpg

It doesn’t matter if you are starting an E-Commerce shop from home or signing to work with Avon. Selling takes a lot of work, rejection & motivation! So maybe a home business is not for you… The facts are most of them do not break even, create web presence & connect with contacts.

Deadly appeal: It is appealing to think you can make $$$ from home before you even get in your morning shower.

Sadly though if you don’t intend to create an aggressive sales or marketing strategy you are better off not doing this. So much for opportunity, when it comes to sales based businesses. You are way better off sticking to needs based products like Insurance, Web design & graphics.

Avoiding this could save you $30 a month minimum.

Sedentary

Why does smoking come in this list? Well what this doesn’t share with the others is this is one thing you don’t usually approach to make your life better! However the deadly appeal greatly targets sedentary people.

Deadly appeal: Smoking does not require a lot of effort & comes with social acceptance.

The really bad downside is,

 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25150976

According to the open U.S. Medical journal smoking & a sedentary lifestyle is linked to cognitive deterioration as well as a great deal of medical issues. However there are no long term benefits to smoking so why start? Or why continue? This is the one thing on the list you rarely approach in an effort to make your life better. Unless you are one of those idiots that believe they are treating their mental health with a bong!

(despite evidence piling up that smoking adversely affect cognitive function.

Quitting smoking could save you $1,500 a year.

Update on my open letter to Poland

Poland letter update.png

Diana Skye writes:

Note: this post is an update on my open letter to Poland. If you haven’t read that, I would encourage you to do so. You can find that here:

Original letter.png

https://toronto-businessphere.com/2017/03/04/poland-i-love-you-but-hate-your-government-an-open-letter-to-my-parents-home-country/

About six months ago, I published an open letter to Poland. It was about how I still love the country but am frustrated with their current government. They have been trying to implement backwards policy changes like a total ban on abortions. They are also supported by extremist Catholic radio station Radio Maryja. The event that inspired me to write the open letter was a ridiculous policy change that personally affected me. I have a Polish citizenship but my Polish passport expired over seven years ago. Therefore, I couldn’t travel there unless I wanted to risk getting stuck in the country for weeks. My only other options were a new passport or canceling my citizenship.

In this update, I have bad news and good news. The bad news is that things have not gotten any better in Poland. The government continues to make crappy decisions in spite of many protests. I keep hoping for some dramatic event that will cause a government change or at least put the country back on the right track. It’s highly unlikely, but a girl can dream. I know that major progress doesn’t happen overnight. I don’t expect marriage equality or widely available abortions anytime soon. However, I would like Poland to be moving into this century instead of back to the mid-1900’s. They were doing well just a few years ago before the current government came to power.

The good news is that my dilemma has been solved. In my open letter, I mentioned the only reason I was keeping my citizenship was to prevent inheritance issues. Since then, my dad has done some research. It turns out that Poland charges the same amount of inheritance tax regardless of citizenship or residency. Since that is not an issue for me, I am now completely fine with canceling my citizenship.

I am very relieved by this turn of events, even though it’s not without drawbacks. I still have to save money and go to the consulate, but I will be able to do it by the end of the year. The process can take up to two years and I still can’t go to Poland within that time. Silly government doesn’t care if you are in the process of cancellation. You are still a citizen until it’s official. Still I am happy that I have figured a way to get out of this weird limbo.

I will always wish nothing but great things for Poland. In the mean time, I will be glad to get my personal troubles resolved. I do want to visit my family in Poland in the future. Therefore I am very happy to have found a solution that does not involve hoping for the best, traveling to another Schengen country, or asking the Canadian embassy to rescue me. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this update.

3 Steps to deal with Admirers you do not want? How to deal with being an unrequited Admirer?

3 Steps to deal with Admirers you do not want

Ashton Deroy Writes: So a few years ago when I was attending Loyalist College in 2014. I had a girl from my old high school bugging me on Facebook about her admiration for me.

This got pretty bad to the point where the clingy admirer named Ashleigh started claiming things such as “If you don’t love me I will kill myself, Ashton.”

What is my background with this woman? I danced with her at an MVD Dance while I was attending ENSS in Brighton Ontario.

So we went from innocent dancing to obsession! Something that, of course, terrifies me not only as an uninterested person but as a gay man.

My 3 steps to dealing with an unwanted admirer.

  1. Be Direct, Tell them you just are not interested
  2. Create distance, Only execute this step after you have told the party you are not interested. Blocking someone for no reason is both cruel and confusing for the other person involved.
  3. Call the police, If someone is needy, batshit crazy or stunned like Ashleigh. You should call the police to make sure they are not dangerous to themselves or anybody else. “Yes this is a huge pain in the ass for you, but so is someone interfering with your intimate relationships.”

How to deal with being an unrequited Admirer

As I said I do sympathize with the admirers in this situation, in 2015-2016 I was head over heels for a red headed Agender person in Belleville, Ontario, Canada named Steph.

I mean I was head over heels for this person, I used to walk to their house in the winter just to spend time with them when I thought they were lonely.

Back during this time I really thought time, friendship and favors would win me their heart. What I didn’t count on was the plain & simple fact that Steph was just an ugly, messed up and sad person who I could not help.

How did I get over my crush which leads to nothing but pain?

  • Dating, Start seeing people who I find attractive and who find me attractive. I’ve met all sorts of interesting guys in the pursuit of letting go of Steph. Honestly, I would not trade these experiences for anything!
  • Moving out of their area, Distance was a must in getting over Steph. As long as I was in Belleville I was going to follow them like a lost dog. So I moved back home to Brighton then moved to Toronto.

  1. Blocking them on Facebook, They don’t need to see what I am doing, and I don’t need to see them. The fact that they were on Facebook and I couldn’t simply talk to them was too painful so I blocked them and just let them go.

Facing rejection isn’t easy, but with a fresh dose of space and new intimate relationships. I think you will find an easy answer to freedom for your mind and heart!
