Why to take your business off of Amazon?

Why to take your business off of Amazon-.png

Shopify intergrated blog

Written by Ashton Deroy: So I finally sat down and started learning about the sales channel of Amazon.ca . What did I learn about this channel? I learned that this channel sucks if you are someone trying to make money off of it! It sucks because you are indexed closely with competitors, products you post are quickly buried & competitors can easily under cut your prices to take your share of the market. I mean it is easy to make these claims but lets talk proof.

Products can be quickly buried in the indexes –

Romance books.png

She has to compete with 1,126,075 other product listings and her book will  be buried depending on how recent it was posted & bids for pay-per-click promotion right from Amazon.ca.

It pays to list for the market! – Because Amazon does the indexing they can make it unfavorably beneficial to sellers who want to pay Amazon to eclipse their own competitors. Especially with their pay-per-click campaigns that you can do right from the Amazon seller service.

A lot of writers do campaigns on GoodReads  but honestly from a buyer’s perspective if you are not a hot writer. Who gives a flying F****?

Competitors under cut costs, manufacturers obsolete their own products. These are the listings for weighted vests. Two of them are from the same manufacturer. Only one listing sells them for substantially less than the other under the index for Weighted vests. It is pretty crappy if you are paying for an indexing under that term and then not only does your product get buried by a higher keyword bidder but they decide to under cut your pricing by  a rounded 42% on the promoted listing. Basically with this process Amazon takes little to no responsibility to their sellers & manufacturers can release new, cheaper products to undercut your existing listings.

Weighted vests.png

The last worry I have about an indexing like this for sellers, entrepreneurs and etc. Is that your competitors can see too easily what you are doing and then obsolete your postings. So say you have a bidder below you and you have ideal pricing. All the bidder below you has to do is check on the indexing and then change their pricing which virtually makes your pay-per-click purchase a waste of money!

(You can be top bidder in the index & get lower hits because your competitor is f****** you on price

Who do I think is ultimately benefiting from Amazon practices?

The company, the shopper & the common items manufacturers. Not the sales agents themselves! Why aren’t the sales agents benefiting? High competition in a toxic cluttered market with nasty rules on favorable indexing based on a bidding system. If you actually hear people talk about their amazon business they actually sound kind of like Multi-level marketing agents, in the sense they are buying from a common manufacturer, not likely making a living wage & having a useless sales channel.

What is the solution? Take your business out of Amazon, put it in to a Shopify integrated Social media WordPress blog.

Written by Ashton Deroy: Hey guys so I have to admit I lost this book Jenny & the driver. My dad always says to me, “don’t take things places you don’t need them.” This was another example of me ignoring that wise advice.

Currently the book is in Alana Skye’s Car.

Ashton Deroy & Alana Skye

Ashton Deroy & Alana Skye at Canada’s Wonderland.

What happened to the book? I took the book to Canada’s Wonderland with Alana knowing most of the day we would stand in line waiting for rides so that I could read the book. I forgot I don’t do things like read when I am around Alana. Mostly we spent the day wandering, looking for a vegetarian food place & becoming delusional from low blood sugar.

However now that I have covered the book is missing! I did manage to read 40 pages and here is what I think of the book so far.

Review of the book: David is a very relate-able character for the reader. He grew up poor with nothing, went to college and got educated as an auto mechanic. He got a really good job as a driver where he got to live in mansion.

Jenny is a beautiful woman who is married to a man who is in a coma. David instantly becomes infatuated with her and the story progresses from there. Other than that in the book so far David has been bitten by a dog & has listened to the family he serves with/for sing terrible folk music.

I am really looking forward to reading this book more however in order for me to do that I will likely have to re-purchase the book. Unfortunately I kind of screwed up my plan to read & promote the book during this summer before my school workload comes in! Hopefully I remember not to lose things moving forward!

3 points on Liberal Party of Canada’s 29 Steps forward content.

Written by Ashton Deroy: Well for those who don’t know I follow the Liberal Party of Canada’s website. https://go.liberal.ca/  This is where I saw the 29 steps forward video that says 29 amazing things that have been achieved under the current Canadian government administration. Here I will highlight on three important and significant steps being made in 2017 that greatly benefit Canada historically, socially & economically.

Pricing carbon pollution – While the United States has pulled out the G20 and not pledged to reduce carbon emissions. Canada is still taking action for a cleaner & better environment. More can be done, but Canada is on the right track. Stimulation to clean environmental initiatives is both beneficial historically and economically. As green business creates more jobs & historically this is when Canada chose to align with much of Europe when the United States chose to be contrarian to this.

Prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity or expression – When the United States President announced bans on Transgendered people serving in the army, Canada has been protecting transgendered persons rights to employment, income and recognition. Canada is also not as deeply involved with the great “Transgender bathroom debate!” Given there should be no real debate here. “Let them take a shit!”

Introduced a bill to legalize, regulate, and restrict access to marijuana – This is an essential movement as well and the backbone of the Liberal campaign. The new laws around marijuana will make access easier, get money out of drug dealer hands & introduce a new stream of government revenue. Not to mention attract 420 loving tourists, once the recreational system is in place.

Three minutes with Trump, The good the bad & the ugly with Ashton Deroy.

3 major points from this tweet.png

Ashton Deroy Writes: For those who don’t know I do follow Donald Trump on Social media. I think from a historical standpoint people are going to be fascinated in this president. The other reason I follow him is because the News continues to show views of Trump with a Liberal bias without ever listening to Trump’s defense. So what can you take from this his weekly Twitter address featured in the picture above?

  1. Bad: He is doing too many favors for the coal industry. According to Mining.com McKinsey can outsource 45% of their jobs to automation. So the jobs he says he is re-creating in this sector are dead! At this point he is just doing favors for management involved in coal trade and no one else. It is very unlikely these choices are going to benefit Americans or the next administration in the long run. It may however benefit the GDP!

2.  UglyHe is creating regulations that enforce & almost guarantee poverty! The average American can hold a job for 3.2 years.   However If you immigrate to the country for the job you take & it inevitably falls through. I guess you have 2 years where you could be starving! This is made worse when it is included employers can legally discriminate against race, religion & etc in the country in most states.

3. Good News, Robotics Engineers & operators are now becoming more employable.  Not everything that has been done has been bad under the Trump administration. With Manufacturing returning to the United States if you have a trade in Robotics engineering you are by far more employable now than you were before. The Robotics industry should be expected to book under the current administration.

Point of sale machines & E-Commerce shops

Are you a business that has or is thinking about having Interac and debit payment solution? OR maybe an E-Commerce shop solution,  Here are some things to consider:

  • How stable is your internet service? – Through many WiFi & Ethernet providers, I have worked for. In certain areas, we did not provide the internet that was supportive enough for certain businesses payment processing needs. Hit or miss internet services, should not set up payment processing machines!
  • Does your customer flow warrant this solution? – Introduction phase businesses should avoid these solutions. If you have a large customer flow an E-Commerce solution can be fantastic. Or even just to better process your sales & product showcase. However… If you are setting up all of your business appointments, quotes, and sales yourself still at this point. Then maybe you do not need an E-Commerce solution. Companies still in a growth marketing phase may want to avoid paying E-Commerce fees while growing their social networks rather than piling expenses that can kill your business!
  • How Supportive is your environment? – Some business environments don’t support WiFi & some areas barely support internet. If you are in an area with under developed wires or consistently down lines. The last thing you want is to start making your business rely on online solutions. The fact is the companies that provide your internet are not going to refund your business inconveniences when your service goes out! They are going to refund a partial payment of your service. So your internet service can become a detriment to your service which is why you must have a backup plan that is practical and affordable for when your internet goes down!
  • How secure is your solution? – Is your solution being updated on time, has your Commerce solution had a hacking scandal recently? How was it addressed?

Top 5 lame business ideas & why.

Ashton Deroy writes: As a marketer I am constantly told about business ideas from friends, relatives & classmates. Some of these ideas were good, & some were so funny that I had to mention them on this forum.

In this post I will not analyze them on the merit of the idea. Rather I will judge them on their affordability and likely low revenue generation.

YouTube Channel.jpg

This is actually an idea I hear a lot of, people saying they will start a YouTube channel and sell advertising space. This idea tends to fall apart when you ask questions such as, What is your content Strategy? What will you do index your page? How will you deal with your own possible negative publicity?

Sure start a YouTube channel, why not? Just don’t expect miracles. Really, don’t be surprised if you turn on the camera and you achieve nothing spectacular! Personally I tried discussing business on YouTube for years but I am not rich so no one really cares. People have gone on record getting higher views on their homemade porn than on their YouTube channels. 😉

Realistically a YouTube channel will not likely make ad revenue unless they have 1000 subscribers, an authority in content & their own external website for proper channel indexing.

Business security.png

In 2016 my brother decided he wanted to start a security business. He did not put much thought in to this business though… As he thought it would be an easy business he could freelance and start. What did he not know? He needs a business license, insurance, a valid security license & contacts for business leads.

In one meeting in regards to setting up this business my other brother suggested just operating without licenses and trained security, however I spoke up and warned them that this would very likely get them sued for securities fraud at the very least…

Marijuana accessories shop.png

Recent Marijuana News:

Ever since Justin Trudeau announced the intention of legalizing marijuana in 2015. Every other person in business school and my own brother has wanted to to get in the marijuana business. Why this is a bad idea? The market is too crowded, most successful vendors are not specialized & buyers do not purchase anything other than specialized accessories online.

Unless you are a pot dealer who already has customers coming to them illegally! Who gives a flying F$#*& about your idea to start this business?

Beaut.jpg

Any excuse to rip on this incredibly glitchy project that seems to be the pride of Helix at Seneca College. What is this business? It is an app, Well it is supposed to be an indexing business for beauticians such as Hair stylists, makeup artists & nail designers. They want to be the Kijiji on beauty essentially!

What are the problems with this idea?

Idealistic thinking, out of beta and government funding, this idea will not work. Why is this? Beauticians have every interest of working under a salon and not so much as self-employed freelancers. Further than that many beauticians I talked to choose not to self-advertise as they think that will make it harder to join a big salon. This business Beaut is trying to interrupt the hair styling industry the same way Uber did with cars & Air BnB did with lodging.

However unless they become a solid vendor that sends beauticians hundreds of clients. It is likely that rather than interrupt the industry they will likely be ignored by it.

What is the problem with everyone? It seems like everyone is in the application development business. I must get 10 emails a day of Indian companies wanting to develop apps for my .com clients. Personally I only am interested in carrying exercise applications on my phone and I am not eager to try every new application anymore. It is dead…

T-shirt design.png

This is a very stupid business idea, T-Shirt design is a hobby not a business! Besides that without having your own equipment you will likely rely on someone else’s printers to run this kind of business & that creates an issue with a markup cost that is much too high to make a profit at this kind of business. Actually in the past I have refused T-Shirt design business partnerships for having an under developed business, no fashion design experience & poor web layout. Again most times this is more of a hobby than a viable business option…

To conclude maybe you read this forum because you are dead set on starting a business. I always tell people a business is like a job, you need to do something that is such a pain in the ass people want to pay you to do it. The best business ideas I would love to get behind are tech support, Sales based & or in the food service industry. However this idea of having fun jobs is idealistic and incredibly stupid.

The problems with off shoring & outsourcing call centers.

Outsourcing.png
Ashton Deroy writes: Off shoring & outsourcing are legitimate business practices used frequent by fortune companies especially in the practice of setting up call centers. This allows the company to focus on their stock price, product development & Public image. However this has been mentioned to be a practice that economically annoys the public, antagonizes business customers and even shatters customer relationships with companies in some cases. What is wrong with the practice of outsourcing? Why is it damaging companies instead of bringing in benefits & furthering the companies?

Honesty & Transparency– Why is outsourcing perceived as dishonest? Think about it the representative is not working really to satisfy the customers. They are working to satisfy the needs or goals of the “Client”. In fact frequently when I was in call centers I struggled with seeing the line between “Doing the right thing” & “Pleasing the client”. What is created here is an environment where you try to please everyone and end up pleasing no one! The customer feels like they have no idea where your interests are at, then the client is mad because they have low customer satisfaction in some cases lower than their internal customer service teams!

(In call centers clients & company representatives rely on multiple sometimes contradicting key performance indicators to evaluate business success.)

They also randomize representatives to customers. Rather than provide direct lines which would establish connection and ensure customer resolution.  This process has frequently made me think the customer & representative relationship was much too unfamiliar.

Outsourced call interests.png

What is the better way to do this? The Employees should work directly with the client & customers. Why do it this way? The vendor has you work with company administrators who just become too many people. With a direct line to the employee/employees they can communicate common issues, trade negotiate concerns directly with the company reps & become self-empowered to resolve any customer issues.

Customer perspective “I have my favorite StarBucks Barista on Facebook! Why can’t I have a direct line to a call center rep I like?”

Over estimation of external tools – Ever supported a 24/7 call center from the cubicle position? Then you know what I am talking about! You cannot run computers, software &other machines all day every day without the systems starting to go to shit. Call centers should NOT be making a 24/7 service promise. For reasons of business limitations, human limitations and tech limitations. Besides this a 24/7 call center requires employees to often work longer hours which wears employees down & increases company churn. If you want a 24/7 operation you should be sorting it out with many call centers taking a chunk of time. Not a bunch of call centers taking 24/7. Customer relationship management software, servers & dialers also start to fail after so much time in use. Which can make it feel like you are helping people with your arms tied behind your back.

Over promising the employees We tried addressing this issues with meetings at my last job but an over promise is an over promise if no resolution is made. So what do I mean by over promising employees? Service contracts are negotiated between clients & call center companies. It is no wonder so many service terms on these contracts are violated as some of the promises have nothing to do with company infrastructure and everything to do with how many call center employees that show up for that day! Call center employees really try to make employers aware when things aren’t working but often it isn’t enough with their personal interests contradicting the interests of the business. Often this results in the business booking employee hours that employees are not willing to complete. Which can result in employee churn & schedule non-compliance.

What could resolve this? Democratically elected employee representatives. The Union is dead in North America and it is really a shame! If someone was writing down legitimate employee concerns & taking them to an admin they might just fix some of the employee issues.

Honestly though despite the challenges of the job, call centers are the job of the future. No matter what line of business you work in you will have to provide customer support & resolution. If a center was able to meet my economic needs, or my scheduling needs. It may be the long term job for me.

Recent Facebook ads

Hey readers,

So since our business is in Advertising I thought I would share some of our recent advertising results and what I found interesting about them. These ads both link to WordPress.com run websites. TeawithTracy.ca & Toronto-Businessphere.com

Tea with tracy

Successful Ad: “Love the tea you drink.” Is a very powerful wording to accompany this ad. We are actually trying to tell the audience what they will feel by purchasing some of my mother’s Tea products. This had a higher engagement than the ad below at 3% rounded up.

What was surprising? Most of the engagement was from males, which was not the intention as the ad was set up to appeal to females. This could be for a variety of reasons including gifting, the fall of hyper masculinity & the LGBT inputs that were put in to the ad targeting.

Ad 1

Failed ad: Service based promotion targeted towards businesses is difficult to make interesting. I think this advertisement could of been made better by trying evoke some kind of emotion in the audience member who viewed this ad.

Another fault was we accidentally hit for this promotion to run for 3 days which slowed its exposure on Facebook.

We also should of focused on our service line instead of the administrators. Part of the reason we did focus on the administrators was because the content running with them on the website was the highest rated content. However a Features & Benefits ad would probably be more effective in the future.

Privacy on the web.png

Ashton Deroy Writes: So I watched the The Terrifying Cost of “Free” Websites, by College Humor .

I have to say this a bluntly common designed entertainment video, that this content  deliberately instills a technophobic reaction in the general ignorant masses. What is wrong with this video? It misleads, it does not include protection facts, prominent solutions for less invasive advertising & tools being created for product users.

Misleading

Most of Facebook targeting is done by pages you like, Statuses you post & searches you made. In fact jokingly after posting gay statuses you can see the advertisements on Facebook’s side ads change to LGBT targeted ads.

Advertisers are not going to Facebook & Google buying target customers. In fact sometimes all advertisers are doing is putting out the message and learning more about their user that maybe they didn’t know. For example Toronto-Businessphere is a English speaking Web Publishing business, that did not realize at first that our specific benefit was our language services in delivering a marketing product.

Facebook encourages protection of your Facebook passwords and accounts from employers.

Posted by Facebook and Privacy on Friday, March 23, 2012

From a modern day stand point this is good that Facebook has made this communication because in the modern day employers are granted way too much allowance in regards to your personal communications. They are now able to monitor what you say publicly, gag you from publishing anything about the company & companies honestly would like access to employee private communications. However Facebook stands on the side against your employer being able to have full control over their employee relationships & privacy.

Do not sell personal data.png

Google does not sell your personal profile. They sell your data algorithms to advertisers who might be relevant to your interest. This is a common practice by Publishers prior to Google. Google just revolutionized the process. Sadly what people think is Google has a picture of you and they are selling you to people. Which is not the reality of what they are doing.

After analyzing the services, you can actually see Google is protecting their proprietary information at a much higher level than Facebook.

Prominent solutions for less invasive Marketing

Okay after doing some research I can say maybe we do take too much information from users on tools like Google & Facebook. The general feeling for users of those tools can even sometime be that they are getting too much of their proprietary information out voluntarily.

Banner ads – These are a bit of an older method for digital marketing but publishing ads on related websites, common interest websites of their customers. Make sure these ads are set up by the website creator though & not an automated system as that still uses data mining tools to target ad campaigns to specific users based on inputted or mined data that the user submits.

Video Marketing – Creating video content and growing your community around that on YouTube & WordPress.

Point of sale print outs -This can include flyers, Coupons, business cards & signage. All of which can help boost your sales on location and are not invasive ways of marketing. Refer to Vista Print

.com setup – This is all the user data I get from my .com here on the Businessphere. None of it was involuntarily obtained &  It has no user specific interests. Rather it allows me to see my highest rated content, where click through come from and where the website has the most hits geographically. Data.png
