Three reasons the minimum wage increase is bad.

As a kid, you might have been taught to work your ass off all day for $20. As an adult, you carried that through a recession, inflation & you’ve used the strong human character to accept circumstances you should blame making a sub-par living for!

Yes, minimum wage raising contributes to rising costs of living, but companies who take more than their share of resources, then pay out little to their communities should take this as a warning.

Employees aren’t talking about their wage to the companies that pay them flat anymore. They are going above their heads to the government to get their fair share!

 1. The absence of workers’ Unions– The government is doing the job for massive corporations that internal workers’ unions should be doing. The minimum wage standards are supposed to be there to regulate the smallest wage, not the absolute wage. Needing to negotiate your wage at the government level opposed to within a company is a feature of socialism, not capitalism.
 2. College graduates still get paid the same rate as non-qualified persons– Something needs to be done to validate our college programs in Canada. Otherwise, the programs should be eliminated. I strongly advocate for the removal of any media design programs and Television broadcasting programs from college institutions for example. Training for a job should lead to a job.
 3. Job elimination in small businesses – Don’t exaggerate this too much. I do feel small businesses should have a varying responsibility in wages than massive corporations. That being said unfortunately these companies are paying the price for a problem they are not primarily at fault for. Changing wages & offers does put massive stress on these businesses however that a two-tier wage system might eliminate.

Listen if you don’t want wages re-negotiated at the government level then here is what needs to happen. We need to bring back internal negotiations for wages in massive companies, We need to manage and eliminate future unnecessary debt in colleges. Lastly, we should hold small businesses less accountable than large businesses for the under waged population.

To anyone who was against this change employed by a larger organization or a company that serves large organizations.

Get over it, if your company has over 100 places of business and over a million customers, you can afford to pay employees more than $11.50-$13.00 hourly. Unfortunately, Canadians need real wages to fight inflation (Caused by global markets) Hopefully this will lead to an increase in recreational spending, investing and development.

“I’d rather have a job than a high mandated wage and no job.”

No, you are an idiot! Canada’s market is becoming similar to India with everyone working in Call Center, Tech & grunt work. To keep up with our neighboring American economy we can’t be India! We have to grow, put money back in working class pockets and rely on proper spending to speed up our economic growth.

Me personally I would rather not live in a situation where working doesn’t guarantee me a future any better than selling drugs on the street. True story, making an honest living in Telecom in Belleville Ontario I earned less and had a lower quality of living than my neighbor who sold weed.

Final thoughts

The simple fact is this, Businessphere is equity funded, it is not profitable. It may never be profitable. We use Facebook & Instagram ad space to try & attract clients but we can only do so much at our current income bracket.

With a change in my external jobs, I can likely grow this project much more and find much more opportunities whilst keeping myself alive. I am still waiting on my big E Commerce account but all I can do is the dream.

I truly am Happy for the announcemnet of a future wage increase! Thank You Liberal government.

Should we do more about mental health issues in Canada’s employment?

Mental illness & working!.png

Deroy, Ashton. “Hard At Work: Why mental health in the workplace is often misunderstood and stigmatized.” CBC.ca. N.p., 12 Apr. 2017. Web. 7 May 2017. <http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/hard-at-work-mental-health-1.4067499>. CBC reports according to the mental health commission of Canada 500,000 Canadians are left unable to work due to mental illness. Diana Skye, the person who does the content guidelines for the Toronto-Businessphere left me a question. Do I think Canada needs to do more for people with mental illness in the workplace? To explore this topic, I want to look at the job market, barriers to job access and regulations around mental illness in the Canadian workplace.

Job Market

Lets face it if you are a person coping with mental illness & you are on the job market. You probably don’t have a lot of long term work experience! However you have these morons in career centers pushing what are known as Chronological resumes. These resumes leave you explaining how long you have worked at a job, why you left it so soon and etc. Personally, I omit dates from my employment history. Stuff happens and I find it rather unfair that the worker carries 100% of the blame for every prior job.

Barriers to job access

You can’t get a job unless you have 2-5 years of experience in many companies, unless you have 100% availability and the job becomes your entire life. Lets be real, this is the situation in Canada at this time. That is why in many areas recreational spending is dropping, or people are turning over employment due to unhappiness. Here are just some of the things preventing you from getting a job. (Despite the ideals of regulations)

 1. Having Dependents – Children limit your availability and in many employer’s eyes hinder your ability to meet the demands of the job.
 2. Having doctor’s appointments – If you tell a company upon looking to be hired that you have to miss time for Doctor’s appointments. They will turn you away in the interview. I have seen this with fast food, customer service & Marketing jobs consistently! See they want to live in this idealistic realm where employees have 100% show rates.
 3. Problems at home – This is a never ending see-saw. If you have problems at home, you will have problems keeping a job. If you have problems keeping a job you accelerate problems at home! This is why many people in situations of domestic abuse, coping with tragedy & or sickness will turnover their employment.

Regulations

https://www.ontario.ca/page/accessibility-laws – Laws promoting accessibility in the workplace.

What needs to be done? In the industries we can, we need to throw out 11-12 hour work days! Either by making anything past 8 hours over time or banning it all together. We need to employ the 35 hour work week law. This way if you have stuff to take care of, it can be taken care of. Many mentally unstable people likely depend on themselves for all elements necessary to their own survival. When you work 40-50 hours a week that just gets too challenging! Lastly we need workplace audits, if a workplace has a ton of churn it is time for Employment Ontario to step in and ask

“Why is this place having people go in and out so much?” It shouldn’t be entirely up to workers to hold organizations up to legal standards (Not being met

Why is Tegan’s campaign successful in my educated opinion as a Business Administration and Marketing Student at Seneca College?

Our People + Target audience + Features and Benefits= Brand positioning for sales.

Tegan personalizes content, she talks to her frequent and new shoppers in the videos and she makes time to talk to customers online and in person. Rather than leaving comments on ads unattended they usually reply to commented content online.

Brand Positioning formula for failing to sales companies.

Name + Offering + Features & Benefits = Positioning on the Market. Why is that formula wrong?

Think of it like this people don’t care about your brand name that is just white noise… The offering, again if they don’t care about your name they probably don’t care about your offering! Features & Benefits, this is good for you. A digital marketing firm approached me about a website today, because they lacked in personalized messaging and they wrote an email about their prestigious name and features and benefits. I said to the firm I would rather hire teenagers than snobs.

What was the problem?

They didn’t even create a sales rapport with me, they didn’t ask how I was doing. Or state they understood my brand’s offering. They just pitched!

Did I give you permission to pitch?

To conclude when it comes to sales & Marketing don’t take personalized approaches out of it. “The Professional approach sucks!” Selling is always personal and it will always be personal. If you are a company just trying to sell a name, well then you are selling wrong. If you are a company selling quality service workers to customers who you know. Then you are selling correctly!
