Top 5 lame business ideas & why.

Ashton Deroy writes: As a marketer I am constantly told about business ideas from friends, relatives & classmates. Some of these ideas were good, & some were so funny that I had to mention them on this forum.

In this post I will not analyze them on the merit of the idea. Rather I will judge them on their affordability and likely low revenue generation.

YouTube Channel.jpg

This is actually an idea I hear a lot of, people saying they will start a YouTube channel and sell advertising space. This idea tends to fall apart when you ask questions such as, What is your content Strategy? What will you do index your page? How will you deal with your own possible negative publicity?

Sure start a YouTube channel, why not? Just don’t expect miracles. Really, don’t be surprised if you turn on the camera and you achieve nothing spectacular! Personally I tried discussing business on YouTube for years but I am not rich so no one really cares. People have gone on record getting higher views on their homemade porn than on their YouTube channels. ūüėČ

Realistically a YouTube channel will not likely make ad revenue unless they have 1000 subscribers, an authority in content & their own external website for proper channel indexing.

Business security.png

In 2016 my brother decided he wanted to start a security business. He did not put much thought in to this business though… As he thought it would be an easy business he could freelance and start. What did he not know? He needs a business license, insurance, a valid security license & contacts for business leads.

In one meeting in regards to setting up this business my other brother suggested just operating without licenses and trained security, however I spoke up and warned them that this would very likely get them sued for securities fraud at the very least…

Marijuana accessories shop.png

Recent Marijuana News:

Ever since Justin Trudeau announced the intention of legalizing marijuana in 2015. Every other person in business school and my own brother has wanted to to get in the marijuana business. Why this is a bad idea? The market is too crowded, most successful vendors are not specialized & buyers do not purchase anything other than specialized accessories online.

Unless you are a pot dealer who already has customers coming to them illegally! Who gives a flying F$#*& about your idea to start this business?

Beaut.jpg

Any excuse to rip on this incredibly glitchy project that seems to be the pride of Helix at Seneca College. What is this business? It is an app, Well it is supposed to be an indexing business for beauticians such as Hair stylists, makeup artists & nail designers. They want to be the Kijiji on beauty essentially!

What are the problems with this idea?

Idealistic thinking, out of beta and government funding, this idea will not work. Why is this? Beauticians have every interest of working under a salon and not so much as self-employed freelancers. Further than that many beauticians I talked to choose not to self-advertise as they think that will make it harder to join a big salon. This business Beaut is trying to interrupt the hair styling industry the same way Uber did with cars & Air BnB did with lodging.

However unless they become a solid vendor that sends beauticians hundreds of clients. It is likely that rather than interrupt the industry they will likely be ignored by it.

What is the problem with everyone?¬†It seems like everyone is in the application development business. I must get 10 emails a day of Indian companies wanting to develop apps for my .com clients. Personally I only am interested in carrying exercise applications on my phone and I am not eager to try every new application anymore. It is dead…¬†

T-shirt design.png

This is a very stupid business idea, T-Shirt design is a hobby not a business! Besides that without having your own equipment you will likely rely on someone else’s printers to run this kind of business & that creates an issue with a markup cost that is much too high to make a profit at this kind of business. Actually in the past I have refused T-Shirt design business partnerships for having an under developed business, no fashion design experience & poor web layout. Again most times this is more of a hobby than a viable business option…

To conclude maybe you read this forum because you are dead set on starting a business. I always tell people a business is like a job, you need to do something that is such a pain in the ass people want to pay you to do it. The best business ideas I would love to get behind are tech support, Sales based & or in the food service industry. However this idea of having fun jobs is idealistic and incredibly stupid.

Publication Plans: PDF click to see.

Written by Ashton Deroy: Hello readers, I am so glad you decided to read this statement about moving forward with Toronto-Businessphere. Our goal is to really grow this publication this summer with another video release, selling more marketing packages and we want to re-do our logo to better position the brand.

Write with us

Submit potential articles to Ashtonderoy@gmail.com . Discuss anything business related, you can even do your own calls to action.

Opportunities to partner with the publication:

.com creation & widget ad = $250

Content plan = $365 per month for daily content updates.

Direct sales campaigns for  lead generation= $1,000

$1120= 2 sales rep on sales execution. (No commission contracts)

Business planning = $1000

Why we charge before sales? It is not our job to create market viability unless you hire us for that. It is our job to contact leads you provide us with. Diana Skye & I are also attending sales seminars, classes & workshops constantly so we aren’t low level Avon sales ladies. ¬†

My Smartphone tries to kill me and others with directions, Now let‚Äôs get a car to drive on those directions!

Self driving cars.png

Written by Ashton Deroy

Casner, Stephen M. The challenges of partially automated driving. N.p.: ACM Digital Library, 2016. Print. This is an article from the digital Library technologies data-base from Seneca College. It discusses the challenges in self-driven vehicle technology. This article helps to prove that this technology is much too risky to come to the market. I apply this to explain why it would be a dangerous technology on the Toronto Roads and Toronto Market. Highlights of this article are the lack of awareness in drivers, the need for manual control and consciousness and how similar technology in planes still has errors.

If anyone has taken direction to travel advice from a GPS recently they realize that this is not a perfect science. In face once when I was out on the road with my friend Kella, her GPS tried to kill us 2 times. Once by trying to drive us off a bridge, once trying to get us to turn in to oncoming traffic. Needless to say rational human common sense is what saved our lives! Now let’s remove that…

First off we are going to have issues when we encourage the drivers to be less attentive to the road. Secondly you can’t program a computer to account for every unpredictable element in Toronto. Lastly all technology has some acceptable amount of errors!

We thought our demises would be met by drunk or texting drivers, this was because it took away the focus from the driver and made them clumsy. How attentive are they going to be when we reduce the amount of time they navigate the vehicle? Some of us are like ‚ÄúScrew personal drivers! It is 2020 I want a computer to take me to work. I will draft up marketing documents in the car while it handles the medial tasks.‚ÄĚ Meanwhile it is this logic that will remain the logic that puts us through the window of the car before we even make it to work. Why is this? It is because just like texting and drinking distracted drivers.¬† Automating the driver will have the pilot not thinking about driving as well.

Secondly how do you program a computerized driver to prepare for the other crazy drivers on a typical Toronto road? The Drivers who despite are supposed to stop at red lights, still manage to nearly kill people at crosswalks! The answer is you can’t. This is why people invented the process of defensive driving. This is not something you can really teach a machine because it something we learned through our human instincts.

Lastly all technology has an acceptable error rate. Honestly as long as a cell phone doesn’t explode. It will stand a chance on today’s tech market. What are the acceptable errors in automated driving? Losing signal in the middle of a highway and halting the drive? Or are we going to have some cool exploding robotic cars? Either way I don’t want to see it.

To conclude I don’t want the automated cars to even hit the market and the roads of Toronto. We will have distracted vehicle pilots, naive vehicle brains and unpredictable vehicle errors. Lets face it , Toronto is deadly enough without robotic cars! So I hope these never hit the market.

E commerce stupidity .png

Written by Ashton Deroy: If you build the website they will come. This is not f***** field of dreams. You are not F***** Kevin Costner!

Three dumb things you hear when setting up E commerce pages:

  1. Market off your profits, as a new eCommerce businessРNo you market off of your goal profits. You allocate capital accordingly, if you invest 0 time, money or work in advertising your sales will  reflect that.
  2. Why are you sharing that blog post on Facebook/Instagram? – How do you think people are going to find your f***** post you dumb son of a B****. Further more I am the publicist you are the client you stupid mother f***** who has never worked over a few months in freelance sales. Don’t you f****** how I share social media content.
  3. I don’t post on my business Facebook/Instagram that often, why don’t I make sales? – You need to make 10 impressions a day you moron and you do nothing to delegate that. Like I don’t know, find a Publicist digitally.¬†

Avoid communications dinosaurs.png

Set up a business professional website for only $40 a month. (Payable by annum)

To do this, start coming up with problems and looking for software solutions.

  1. Collaboration software – Don’t use an email back and for system. It is archaic and annoying and no one is on the same page. You need to use Google Drive to Synchronize your teams on important projects.¬†
  2. Meetings and voice messaging РFor really important conversations I am starting to record video messages on SnapChat.
  3. Customer acquisition and events promotion РFacebook & Instagram are still the standard to handle this.
