Is religion still interfering with my Human rights?

Faith vs Human rights.png

Written by Ashton Deroy: Most times if someone brought this topic to my attention, religion versus gay rights. I would shrug it off & say you can have some of the traditions with religion while simultaneously respecting the rights of others. My grandma is a great example of a woman who reads the bible, says grace before meals & loves her openly gay grandsons. However, since moving to Toronto I’ve began noticing that usually where you see religion here, you do not see the same kind of tolerance that I used to see at home. You can see this in publishing with Eugene Peterson a pastor who had his publication on Bible interpretation removed from a book store, Religious activism in Toronto & all of the discreet gay/bisexual men in the city.

First off Eugene Peterson, the pastor who published his interpretations of the bible and said he would perform a same sex marriage is a classic example of religion not upholding the country’s values for human rights. All he had to do was speak publicly about the fact that he would perform a same-sex marriage to a public forum, then the Christian conservative community was refusing to sell his books & questioning whether they should read his words at all. It is a three year education to become a pastor, after which you appear before a congregation that approves you. Should the fact that the man expresses a socially Liberal opinion in Canada, 2017 really remove his value in his community? The second part to this story is that it is kind of hard to believe you can still take heat in Toronto for being an LGBT ally.  What does this interfere with? Well choosing your religion as a public LGBT individual is still a challenge & gaining access to a religious sales channel or business institution is also still a challenge.

Despite the time we live in, & the socially Liberal culture we live in here in Toronto. It still isn’t unusual to see something like this going around!

anti LGBT remarks.jpg

The last thing is with the dating community of Toronto you still see a lot of in the closet discreet Gay & Bisexual men. When you ask 2/3 of them why they are in the closet what do you get? One person says “most of the time you are going to get from most of them that they are from religious families that condemn same sex relationships.” So rather than cut ties with their family they choose to live discreetly and rather unhappy to avoid losing family ties, financial support or even love in some cases!  What does this do? Well this becomes a hurdle to me a gay man looking to have an open, honest same sex relationship, which is one of my rights.

Now it isn’t all bad in the religion versus human rights argument. Toronto has a massive presence with pro-LGBT Jewish people who frequently make public statements of acceptance & love. Many of these people even share stories of LGBT relatives & how their faith adapts to LGBT rights. So while Christianity can sometimes seem a bit too conservative you can see Jewish people are much more left socially.

Yes it does look like in 2017 in Toronto Ontario Canada. Religion does still step on my rights as a gay man & forces many men to hide in the closet. However I think the Jewish Canadians can lead the way in practicing religion with acceptance and forming more open institutions.

Bad things happen once again for a religious pastor who went public backing same sex marriage. This article published July 2017 tells Eugene Peterson story of having his book removed from religious bookstores because he said publicly that when he was a pastor he would perform a same sex marriage. The incident has now had his book The Message removed from right wing religious bookstores & has people asking in the religious Christian community, should we be reading Eugene Peterson books?

3 Steps to deal with Admirers you do not want? How to deal with being an unrequited Admirer?

3 Steps to deal with Admirers you do not want

Ashton Deroy Writes: So a few years ago when I was attending Loyalist College in 2014. I had a girl from my old high school bugging me on Facebook about her admiration for me.

This got pretty bad to the point where the clingy admirer named Ashleigh started claiming things such as “If you don’t love me I will kill myself, Ashton.”

What is my background with this woman? I danced with her at an MVD Dance while I was attending ENSS in Brighton Ontario.

So we went from innocent dancing to obsession! Something that, of course, terrifies me not only as an uninterested person but as a gay man.

My 3 steps to dealing with an unwanted admirer.

  1. Be Direct, Tell them you just are not interested
  2. Create distance, Only execute this step after you have told the party you are not interested. Blocking someone for no reason is both cruel and confusing for the other person involved.
  3. Call the police, If someone is needy, batshit crazy or stunned like Ashleigh. You should call the police to make sure they are not dangerous to themselves or anybody else. “Yes this is a huge pain in the ass for you, but so is someone interfering with your intimate relationships.”

How to deal with being an unrequited Admirer

As I said I do sympathize with the admirers in this situation, in 2015-2016 I was head over heels for a red headed Agender person in Belleville, Ontario, Canada named Steph.

I mean I was head over heels for this person, I used to walk to their house in the winter just to spend time with them when I thought they were lonely.

Back during this time I really thought time, friendship and favors would win me their heart. What I didn’t count on was the plain & simple fact that Steph was just an ugly, messed up and sad person who I could not help.

How did I get over my crush which leads to nothing but pain?

  • Dating, Start seeing people who I find attractive and who find me attractive. I’ve met all sorts of interesting guys in the pursuit of letting go of Steph. Honestly, I would not trade these experiences for anything!
  • Moving out of their area, Distance was a must in getting over Steph. As long as I was in Belleville I was going to follow them like a lost dog. So I moved back home to Brighton then moved to Toronto.

  1. Blocking them on Facebook, They don’t need to see what I am doing, and I don’t need to see them. The fact that they were on Facebook and I couldn’t simply talk to them was too painful so I blocked them and just let them go.

Facing rejection isn’t easy, but with a fresh dose of space and new intimate relationships. I think you will find an easy answer to freedom for your mind and heart!

Three minutes with Trump, The good the bad & the ugly with Ashton Deroy.

3 major points from this tweet.png

Ashton Deroy Writes: For those who don’t know I do follow Donald Trump on Social media. I think from a historical standpoint people are going to be fascinated in this president. The other reason I follow him is because the News continues to show views of Trump with a Liberal bias without ever listening to Trump’s defense. So what can you take from this his weekly Twitter address featured in the picture above?

  1. Bad: He is doing too many favors for the coal industry. According to Mining.com McKinsey can outsource 45% of their jobs to automation. So the jobs he says he is re-creating in this sector are dead! At this point he is just doing favors for management involved in coal trade and no one else. It is very unlikely these choices are going to benefit Americans or the next administration in the long run. It may however benefit the GDP!

2.  UglyHe is creating regulations that enforce & almost guarantee poverty! The average American can hold a job for 3.2 years.   However If you immigrate to the country for the job you take & it inevitably falls through. I guess you have 2 years where you could be starving! This is made worse when it is included employers can legally discriminate against race, religion & etc in the country in most states.

3. Good News, Robotics Engineers & operators are now becoming more employable.  Not everything that has been done has been bad under the Trump administration. With Manufacturing returning to the United States if you have a trade in Robotics engineering you are by far more employable now than you were before. The Robotics industry should be expected to book under the current administration.

Recent Facebook ads

Hey readers,

So since our business is in Advertising I thought I would share some of our recent advertising results and what I found interesting about them. These ads both link to WordPress.com run websites. TeawithTracy.ca & Toronto-Businessphere.com

Tea with tracy

Successful Ad: “Love the tea you drink.” Is a very powerful wording to accompany this ad. We are actually trying to tell the audience what they will feel by purchasing some of my mother’s Tea products. This had a higher engagement than the ad below at 3% rounded up.

What was surprising? Most of the engagement was from males, which was not the intention as the ad was set up to appeal to females. This could be for a variety of reasons including gifting, the fall of hyper masculinity & the LGBT inputs that were put in to the ad targeting.

Ad 1

Failed ad: Service based promotion targeted towards businesses is difficult to make interesting. I think this advertisement could of been made better by trying evoke some kind of emotion in the audience member who viewed this ad.

Another fault was we accidentally hit for this promotion to run for 3 days which slowed its exposure on Facebook.

We also should of focused on our service line instead of the administrators. Part of the reason we did focus on the administrators was because the content running with them on the website was the highest rated content. However a Features & Benefits ad would probably be more effective in the future.

Wal-Mart’s new T-shirt line.

Wal-Mart Uniform

Ashton Deroy Writes: The Toronto Star reported July 14th on Wal-Mart offending tons of indigenous people with this highly offensive T-Shirt. When asked about the T-Shirt to an anonymous Wal-Mart employee they said “That was on the shelf? That was supposed to be our new uniform.

That employee then went on to make Union conversation… So Wal-Mart, ATTACK!

The shirt really does offend because of indigenous children who were wrongfully moved from homes to residential school systems as apart of our society’s extensive cultural conformity.  This is wrong Wal-Mart because this shirt is making a joke out of a situation that was not funny! Bad Wal-Mart, VERY BAD WAL-MART! *Smack you on the nose with a Newspaper!” This is why I bought my coffee maker on something called “Amazon“.

amazon_edited-1.jpg

Wal-Mart is also planning to celebrate more cultural diversity by growing their T-Shirt line in months to come. With future classics such as:

Black history month’s

Cotton.png

“Escaped the Cotton Farm!” – A reference to the barbaric cotton farms slaves were and are still made to work in around the world.

Pride Month T-Shirt

Gay shirt.png

“Can’t shock the gay out of me!”- A reference to how society used to try and cure homosexuals with electricity. Apparently, that will rewire you to the straight and narrow!

Thank you for reading this blog, Wal-Mart I will see you in Hell! Byeee!

Perceptual map of the cosmetics industry.

Perceptual map of makeup industry.png

Written by Diana Skye

This is a perceptual map of popular beauty brands. The further to the right a brand is, the higher the quality of their products. The higher up a brand is, the more expensive they are.

Bottom Left: Wallet-friendly brands with low-quality products

Elf: One of the least expensive makeup brands. While they have some good products, the quality is very hit and miss. I have bad experiences with their eye shadow and brushes. However, I did like the brow kit.

Colourpop: An online-only brand made popular by social media. I have not tried them but seen many reviews on their products. Their first launch of matte liquid lipsticks got very negative reviews, being compared to nail polish on your lips. On the other hand, the satin liquid lipsticks were well received.

Reviews: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VCF40kxhJo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrhcu6sVAGQ

Coastal Scents: They started out making large eye shadow palettes, but have since branched out into other products. I used the shimmer palette several years ago. While I liked the variety of shades, some colors worked better than others. Also, there was a lot of glitter fallout.

Bottom Right: Wallet-friendly brands with high-quality products

Wet N Wild: Not only is Wet N Wild very affordable, the quality is comparable to high-end brands. I always say that if you need an inexpensive neutral palette, get Comfort Zone. It has eight high-quality shadows for less than $5. Their lip and cheek products are also very good.

Nyx: Nyx has one of the best color selections I have seen for eye and lip products. I am seldom disappointed by what I try from them. They have expanded quite a bit as there are now Nyx stores in Canada.

Top Left: High-end brands with low-quality products

Kylie Cosmetics: I refuse to buy from Kylie Cosmetics and not just because I dislike the Kardashians. They are owned by the same brand as Colourpop. The lip kits are very similar, but more than double the price. Also, they have had issues with quality control, such as nearly empty liquid lipsticks.

Reviews: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfJS4AeesAU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxZGf4WoZew

Too Faced: While Too Faced used to be one of my favorite brands, the quality has gone downhill in the past year and a half. The peach line is very inconsistent and a brow product was released in only two shades. The last new release I enjoyed was the Bon Bon’s palette.

Top right: High-end brands with high-quality products

Pixi: Pixi specializes in high-quality natural products. In addition to makeup, there are a lot of skin care products. While it’s available at Target or Shoppers Drug Mart, the prices are higher than drugstore brands. However, I would recommend their skin care to anyone who does not want to splurge on brands at Sephora.

Urban Decay: My first high-end purchase was from Urban Decay and I have loved them every since. Their palettes are well loved for a good reason since they have one of the best eyeshadow formulas. They also make my favorite face highlighter and have over a hundred shades of lipstick.

Kat Von D beauty: This brand was started by the artist of the same name. I have yet to buy a product I dislike from Kat Von D beauty. While the products are expensive, I feel they are worth the money. The liquid lipsticks are my favorite formula.

Church Street, Point of Pride? Or Drug addicts & bathhouses?

Ashton Deroy

About this Writer: Ashton Deroy  is 23, Gay, male, living in Toronto and going to School for Business & Marketing at Seneca College.

Church Street, point of pride

Thursday June 1st 2017 will start Pride week in Toronto, this will be the only time of the year I can possibly get Diana Skye to Church street in Toronto. Why won’t she go otherwise to the gay culture hub of Toronto?

For me my worst experience in Church Street begins with a little app the gays call GrindR.

I went there hoping to meet a guy who I met on the app for a booty call. Cause to be honest that is the nature of all meetings from that app.

As I got to know him and what he was like I learned he was a bit of a sex addict quite obviously and he was inhaling something called poppers.

He offered me some then I declined. After he offered me a hookup, but to be honest I just wasn’t feeling it after I saw the drugs come out and I just went home. This was my personal fright with Church Street. Here are some more notable happenings:

Hudes, Sammy. “Toronto police raid 4 marijuana dispensaries.” Toronto Star. N.p., 29 Mar. 2017. Web. 18 Apr. 2017. <The Star Article >. Sam Hudes wrote this article for the Toronto Sun, This article contains the information about a raid on 4 Marijuana dispensaries in Toronto Ontario. This relates to this article because one of the locations busted was on 461 Church Street, Toronto Ontario. This article proves that on Church Street the LGBT community is experiencing issues with drugs, illegal drug distribution and other crimes that domino from that. This also proves there needs to be police on Church Street, for more than just an occasional raid!

Mann, Arshy. “Toronto councillor wants to enforce bylaw that could shut down almost every LGBT club.” Daily Xtra. N.p., 30 Mar. 2017. Web. 18 Apr. 2017. <Daily Xtra article>. Arshy Mann speculates on weather all of the establishments in Church Street Toronto are properly licensed and a pending law that could shut them down. While saying these bylaws are almost impossible to follow, it is clear from a reader perspective that this is just one of many examples that show regulations on Church Street are not quite as moral as they should be. The article goes on to mention that at this time there are only 40 licensed clubs in Toronto and none of them are on Church & Wellesley.

To conclude, Church street could be a hub for LGBT+ culture in Toronto, but I am begging Toronto OPP to continue to clean this mess up! Read this related article: OPP denied a float at Toronto Pride 2017.
