Orphan Black .png

Orphan Black is a Canadian sci-fi TV series filmed mostly in Toronto. The fifth and final season started on June 10, 2017. I first came across this show in 2014 and it’s been my favorite ever since. It examines moral issues around cloning, has great characters, and is constantly surprising me. I’m sad that it’s ending, but I have seen what happens to shows that get dragged out so they keep airing. Besides, it will be an amazing season if the first episode was any indication.

Orphan Black centers around a group of female clones all played by Tatiana Maslany. The series opens with con-artist Sarah Manning witnessing a woman commit suicide. She notices that Beth Childs looks exactly like her and steals her purse. She meets several of her clones soon after. At first, Sarah is only interested in Beth’s money, but she grows to care about her sisters. They are fighting threats from the extremely religious Proletheans and the science institute DYAD. A few of the clones also develop a

A few of the clones also develop a mysterious life-threatening illness. The show examines the moral implications of cloning as well as how it affects each sister’s identity. Other clones include soccer mom Alison, scientist Cosima, Ukrainian assassin Helena, and “pro clone” Rachel. Each one has her own personality and struggles.

Sometimes I find it hard to believe they are all portrayed by the same actress. Maslany is extremely talented, doing many different accents flawlessly. The non-clone characters are fantastic as well. Sarah’s biological daughter Kira is very precocious and senses when things are not right. Her foster brother Felix and mother Siobhan have strong personalities yet are very loving. Cosima’s girlfriend Delphine does whatever she feels is best for her even if it compromises their relationship. Alison’s husband Donnie often provides much needed comic relief. I recall a scene where he accidentally killed an antagonist and I couldn’t help laughing.

Another thing that makes the show amazing is unexpected plot twists. I didn’t like Helena in the first season. However, she turned out to have a soft side and is now one of my favorites. Certain characters turn out to have hidden motives or be more involved in the conspiracy than I thought. The genetic original was not who I was expecting at all. There are many emotional moments. One scene in season four had me crying harder than I ever have during a TV show. I even tweeted that I wished I could kill a certain antagonist. However, there are many heartwarming moments too. I really enjoyed the ending of season three where several clones were having dinner together and reminiscing about recent events.

If you have not seen Orphan Black, I highly recommend it. The show deals with moral issues of cloning, has amazing characters with strong bonds, and always surprises you. New episodes air every Saturday at 10 PM on Space and are available on space.ca soon after. Past seasons can be watched on Crave TV. I am excited to see what transpires during the rest of the final season.

The Space Between Us Movie review, Purchased via Google Play.

The Space Between Us Movie Review.png

Ashton Writes: The Space Between us is a Sci-Fi & Romance movie about the first human being born on Mars traveling to earth.  Asa Butterfield plays the male lead Gardner the first person ever born on Mars, who is a heart in his sleeves romantic with some social abnormalities from his birth’s circumstances which the movie portrays really well.

The female lead is Britt Robertson who plays Tulsa. One of the first things I like about this film is unlike older movies Britt gets more of the bad ass role opposed to the male lead being the the cool character. Tulsa’s character is a foster child with an intense amount of street smarts who I find is neccescary to capture the adventure the two characters have in the film.

In the film the two characters start of chatting on their computer systems. Then Gardner travels to earth and disappears for 7 months. This of course pisses off Tusla’s character and she almost can’t even tolerate Gardner when she sees him again.

The movie really plays out as a fantastic adventure with the two characters getting to more trouble then you would initially expect. In the end you expect the climax you get to some degree but getting there is so fantastic and wonderful.

I 100% reccomend this movie if you are a fan of romantic movies or Sci-Fi movies. I do not think this movie will disappoint its targetted audience at all. Which is why for my first Google Play Movie Review I will give this movie five stars.

Why we aren’t currently social media marketing

Presentation1.png

Ashton Deroy writes: It is plain to see I still write Social media, website & SEO content. However I have not taken out any web based advertising in 2017 at all. Why haven’t I taken out any ad space? According to Marketline Instagram and Facebook are the best affordable mediums for a B2B targeted campaign.

What am I doing instead? I am relying on content to gain traction, I am reaching out in the community and utilizing the SEO tools with the WordPress.com Business package. Listen it is clear to see that within this year if I want to continue running my business I will need a new advertising + Sales campaign! It is just a matter of creating one that will bring in new contacts that I can convert in to clients. I am also going to hang up posters around Toronto.

It is also important to not here that it is great if Social Media Marketing boosts your idea! It is not great if your idea lives and dies with Social Media Marketing…

There is no conversion guarantees in Social media marketing. Some people like to think like, okay if I get in front of this ____ people, I will sell to 4% of the people! It is highly idealistic, but you a web based business, If you convert 1%, it is a miracle. Plus web businesses have the cliche flaw of being really under developed. I sold to my first client thanks to social media advertising, but it was a small sell.

Minimizing advertising to focus on development. Ironically, I saw Beaut doing this and I thought it was stupid as hell! It still kind of is, because my sales projects aren’t down just my advertising is down. Toronto Businessphere needs a new logo, we need to print merchandise & create a community relations plan.

Capital expansion. Ashton Deroy is going to be starting a job at Teleperformance in time to put a little capital in the business and keep fueling this little fire. Don’t let the internet fuel you, these businesses require a massive amount of capital to start, and a massive amount to keep going! Considering people that enhance Toronto-Businessphere get paid. The need is still present for full time employment to continue development of the brand.

My friend actually said “This is a good idea but I wouldn’t spend money on it until it makes money.” Having no business background she had no idea for an idea to make money you actually have to spend a lot of money. Business projects are long term investments that require capital to fund and can require increasing amounts of capital for five years before even approaching a break even point. This was something I learned through studying Financial accounting in school though, not from working telemarketing where her and I met.

I do see other people online begging for their projects to expand so it can become full time work. I actually don’t think that is what I want at this time… I think I am glad this project is still small because if it was big it would be out of control a bit. I also think I miss the working world and I can’t wait to go back in to it and develop more professionally.

Written by Ashton Deroy: In the new era of attempting to find marketability for websites, apps and software applications. Developers often try to make application, website or their service have nothing to do with the people involved.

1. What are the 4 I’s of service? Intangibility, Inconsistency, Inseparability and Inventory.

People have everything to do with your business! Stop taking them out of the process. In purchasing. Emotions, perceptions and beliefs never stop mattering.

Three things users hate when they arrive to a website:

  • They can’t find a public profile for the person they just talked to – This shows this person has no authority within the company and therefore does not matter.  People are more aware of the Power distant index and working for Rogers Communications customers realized if they didn’t want to do a simple transaction process, add services or troubleshoot tech. I had no authority.
  • You can’t find information on the company authority – A customer can’t find the boss because the boss doesn’t want to talk to them! This still works for bigger companies but in smaller companies the boss needs to be available at the user’s beckon call.
  • Comprehensive information on background, mission and history – Why does this venture exist? What is the purpose? What is the owner’s history prior to starting this venture? Chances are that is all the information needed for traffic to make their mind up towards making a purchasing decision.

20 Reasons Publishing strategies are better for boosting brands.

  1. Behavioral target segmentation – You want to sell fishing gear? You create a fishing blog, magazine or forum.
  2. Readers become customers – First they read your work, then they trust your authority lastly they go to you with a problem. That is how I was able to get Dignity Repairs as a client in 2015.
  3. Editorials create a press interest – Every-time you post a blog there is chance someone picks it up, finds it interesting and then next thing you know, a brand has impressions on blogs, news outlets and radio stations. Refer to my ex clients’ BBC interview on the third gender in beyond the binary.
  4. Viral effect – The internet now has a way of spreading brand impressions on the web even out of a community manager’s control.  In other words going viral! 🙂
  5. Indexing -Customers are looking for someone like you! With Canada 411 if you are a restaurant, web developer or driving taxi. You need to be indexed so you can convert customers right from your listing.
  6. Informational strategies – With Publishing all the information needed to make a purchase decision is put up in to a convenient area on the web.
  7. Growing contacts – Every-time someone likes an ad on Facebook the company receives their contact information which is good for potentially prospecting leads
  8. Integrated Marketing Communications – A Publicist creates a consistency for every element in the promotional mix to make sure everything is done in an effort to maximize campaign efforts and meet the goals with the key performance indicators.
  9. Primary research acquired – Through 13 blogs I’ve been able to figure out, how to generate web traffic? How to sell using web content? What makes your audience bounce off a website? What makes them stay?
  10. Tags research – A good Publicists looks at tags, measures their engagement and looks at who is saying what.
  11. Knowing where to be and when to announce it – In Kingston, Kingston Pride competed with a variety of gay events businesses. Rather than being exactly everywhere the competitors were, we decided to take to the strategy of being louder. More social media ads, an external web promotion and print/radio publications our competitors could not use.
  12. Telling the story – Why do you pay writers Ashton? Well that is because writers know how to tell you about a business launch, product/service expansion or event and make it interesting! The worst content creator you can acquire is someone who only has a Business or Advertising background. They usually know nothing about creating high traffic content.
  13. Establishing authority – Not just through text and alerting people to your certifications. There are certain ways to set up a website that show authority and other ways which make you look like you are blogging out of a basement.
  14. Managing conversations – It is not enough to post content in tags, you actually have to engage with people in the tags. A publisher does that.
  15. Establishing relationships with influential members of the community
  16. Accessing a Publishers’ personal contacts. Some are linked to famous YouTube channels, News papers and marketing channels that you wouldn’t have access to other wise.
  17. Content scheduling – The reason why Publishers want a brand to post constantly is to avoid becoming invisible. It takes 24 hours for a brand to go mute in today’s online market.
  18. Analyzing Marketing dashboards – Looking at Key Performance indicators for a marketing campaign and determining why factors were high or weren’t.
  19. Creating the brand – The best hot brands are created with a publishing strategy in mind
  20. High Traffic channel management – We manage the contacts of Facebook, Instagram, Google, Websites and Press.

Promotional selling

Promotional Selling.png

Ashton Deroy writes: While studying chapter 17 of McGraw Hill’s Marketing Connect. I was taking notes on sales promotion methods and I thought I might write a blog on my experience in this industry.

Back in 2015, a classmate at Loyalist College said to me, “You would be great in sales promotion.” What I didn’t realize was at the time this actually meant. “You would be great in low-paying roles that back execution of campaigns but not actually strategizing them.”

So over the years, I worked sales promotion campaigns for Dove, Shaw Cable, Rogers Communications, T-Mobile, and my own B2B campaigns on Facebook.

Strengths to using sales promotional reps: Friendly faces, higher persuasion rate, Voices register more with the brain than print. Consumers sometimes don’t mind chitchatting in stores they are already in!  On T-Mobile we had advertisements promote the B2B deals and my role was just to activate SIM Cards. That type of strategy is much more effective than telemarketing.

Weaknesses of Sales promotion reps: It instills a culture of everyone’s will can be bent to a product. In the cases of Shaw Cable & Rogers Communications using Telemarketing through S&P Data actually caused a bit of un-calculated, unrecorded statistics on brand damage.

Below are the chapter 17 notes of Marketing Connect. Download the PDF by clicking the text below:

Article 1: Keys to team work success, Article 2: Anything Dark?

Shaun Vollick Seneca

Podium

March 27th 2017, Ashton Deroy was in the Senacentre to learn about success, teamwork and project management from Shaun Vollick MEd, PMP.  This was an event organized by the Seneca College Business group which had free pizza, coffee & discussion amongst Business, Human Resources and Engineering students.

Team work agile approach Shaun Vollick proposes that the new methodology for team work should be approached with an agile approach. Constantly adapting the team to the changes of economics practices, competitors and demands of the client/customer. He does suggest this ideology is not idiot proof as it requires management to eventually produce end products to projects!

Success keys , work to not specialize, from what I gathered there needs to be more focus put on showing up communicating and delegating. A project can change in a heartbeat, think of the variables in play with any project, who is it for? What is the desired outcome? What is the research? With all of these factors projects can change in the blink of an eye. So if you can’t show up for them, you won’t succeed in them!

Project management three general guidelines

  1. Delegate – It is better if you don’t try to do everything yourself. Make sure everyone knows their role and its purpose.
  2. Document – Produce minutes or record keeping of all team team meetings.
  3. Ask for help, Give help – For school & work projects you may be learning like everyone else. Don’t be afraid of being a little lost! It sounds cliche but give help to your peers, everyone has a different learning curve.

Anything dark-.png

Written by Ashton Deroy

Gay, Atheist and Business person

Commentary: I wrote this essay for myself because I really have not written anything creative in a while. I wanted to write something against the fake optimism we as a society are expected to conform to every day. The tone of this article is very dark. I feel that is because “Smiling” is not the key to making all of your problems go away. I consider the benefits of fake optimism more false promises than useful guidance for a higher quality life.

I truly achieved some of my best writing, accomplishments, and attention through negative, dark & satirical works. Not from writing happy stories & articles meant to satisfy everyone.

Instructions to operate in life: Stand to the right or left single file, use a good posture, and smile! No matter what is going on let them all see you smile because not smiling is a negative thing. You can engage in conversation with the people to your right & left but make sure they follow our “code of conduct.” Also, remember to smile because everyone likes it when you smile! Remember you live to serve and please and nothing more.

If you are in the service industry in Ontario Canada for over one year. Hopefully, you have learned to submit, be passive and compartmentalize your personal life from your professional life. Make no mistake you are a slave, you will work when you are told, follow rules and guidelines and you may not request a day off or salary increase, that is non-negotiable! Answer every inquiry with a happy to help attitude and if you are not a passive to confrontation, you better learn!

“Stop worrying about what’s scary or stressful” they will tell us!

The little Things. Toronto: Anything Bright, 2016. Print.

Once you believe that lie you are almost ready to believe the other lies of optimism to. Lies that include consuming your way to happiness, while in the same breath they will tell you to accept earning less at work because money does not equal happiness. All because this is society that would rather push two contradicting beliefs of operation rather than accept there is a real issue upon us. To be optimistic though this is to accept not being entitled to a better job, a nicer place and a more exciting romance!

Ever sit there and wonder why are mental illness rates keep shooting upwards?

Approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S.—43.8 million, or 18.5%—experiences mental illness in a given year. Approximately 1 in 25 adults in the U.S.—9.8 million, or 4.0%—experiences a serious mental illness in a given year that substantially interferes with or limits one or more major life activities.”

NAMI. Mental Health By The Number. N.p.: National alliance on mental illness, n.d. Print. This article is to write about the prevalence and rise of mental illness in North America. Ashton Deroy is using this statistic to make a direct connection between mental illness and the type of work society does. Ashton Deroy asks When you look at this statistic, does being blindly optimistic seem logical? Or do you maybe think if something is bothering you it might be time to talk about it. That is might be time to be a little negative, hurt and just maybe it is time to feel used!

Did you think about why mental illness rates are shooting up? They aren’t, they just went unrecorded while society conformed to the comforting lies of blind optimism, god and the cloudy beautiful place we go when we die. As an atheist, I equate the belief in god as the same stupidity as blind optimism. So you can bet one of the first things I want to ask a blindly optimistic person when I meet them. “Do you believe in god?” If I were them I would be too optimistic, because I am high. My drug is religion, religion & conformity.

Religion & conformity isn’t a drug you have to shoot up, it isn’t going to give you the shakes if you go without it but it is quite mentally powerful never the less. Just look at the body count of people dying every year due to nationally enforced religious laws…. What should you think about instead of religion? Well, what is real? Are you getting paid enough? Are you getting laid enough? Are you respected to your exact liking in your place of work? Of course, these are not the fixations society wants you to have because they might just make you too uppity.

Thank you for reading this, I know this was not a comforting piece to read. However, I wanted to write it to challenge the blind optimism that encouraged time to time. Is there anything wrong with being happy? No there is nothing wrong with it. Is there anything wrong with presenting as happy all of the time? Yes, it is unauthentic and fake!

Achieving a sales revenue & profit in a non-essential business is becoming increasing difficult.

Achieving a sales revenue & profit in a non-essential business is becoming increasing difficult..png

Written by Ashton Deroy

Do you run a human interest website? Or sell knick-knacks, antiques, collectibles, accessories, knitted clothing and etc. Well bad news sales revenue & profit is becoming increasing difficult for micro business & small business. For this essay I am going to look at three mandatories for profitable business.  That include being Marketable, using clear positioning and leveraging high reach.

Marketable

Just because you want to sell doesn’t mean the customer wants to buy in a way where you break even, and forget profiting!

Sandals, Leah. Canadians Spending Less Time on Arts and Culture. N.p.: Canadian art, n.d. Print.

In this article there is a discussion about how Canadians are spending less money on arts & culture.

In fact the connection has been made clearly with the recession in 2008 to Canadians spending less on leisure period.

The same economic principles applied for this can also be applied to Custom T-Shirts, Knick-knacks, entertainment. In B2B apply this economic principle to Advertising, Graphics Design & media. It gets worse if you are not pro-actively seeking leads, direct selling & creating content.

Clear Positioning

This may come as a shock but even though I am a writer for a recreational student forum. I have thought about the positioning of Toronto-Businessphere advertising clearly and I have made my messaging consistent in Facebook ads used to generate leads.

Toronto Businessphere Positioning Statement: We are a Business Student and graduate business forum that offers free articles to readers on the 6 Environments of marketing & we offer marketing solutions to middle to large sized businesses & organizations.

I’ve worked two separate publishing jobs where I had no comprehension of sales positioning because it literally was no thought out.

High Reach

You don’t know if a product or service is going to sell unless you utilize a high reach system like Facebook or Instagram, paired with a direct selling strategy to leads generated.

This is where we come into play, for $300 hire Toronto-Businessphere & Ashton Deroy for Social media Advertising strategy. 7* 12 = $84, $16 is overhead expense. The rest goes to social media ad space and lead generation which will be capitalized on by an expert sales person.

Small Business = Big pressure!

Small Business = Big Pressure.png

Written by Ashton Deroy: Small Businesses are currently defined in Canada as Businesses with under 100 employees. With that in mind we should define a micro-business as a business with under 20 employees.

A lot of people think if you work in a small business this takes away your pressure for high performance and professionalism. When in fact your small team and close knit relationship with your boss probably in fact demands a higher performance not less!

While people may think it is okay to express stress by exhibiting bad attitudes at work. The fact of the matter is in a small business setting the quarters are much too tight between a boss and the employees to display that kind of behavior. As a result this cliche proves that you need to perform higher in a small business rather than lower. It goes to show Starter companies are not the kickback, feet on the table kind of businesses people expect them to be!

Promotional Messaging

Widget advertising.png

Higher stakes when employees under perform.

Personal Capital at stake– Take it from Ashton Deroy an ex employee of two small businesses. When the boss has personal equity in the business and they know their ass is on the line. They are far more likely to care when you screw up! Far less likely to show sympathies bigger companies have the benefits of showing.

Running a small business is serious and if they have gotten the business to self-sustain you can bet the spent a lot of money to get there. I have worked for an ex Health food store in Brighton Ontario which has shut down and Willow’s Publishing on commission. Those were to examples of the most anal bosses I have ever had!

Pressure to keep up – If you are the new guy on a 5-20 person team. You can start your job with your foot half way out the door because the first 3 months will make you or break you. Now is the time to shine, or pack your shit. Dangers of entering a business clique like this is working against the waves in motion, haunting productivity or going against the business culture. Your best hope is to assimilate and find your place in the business.

Pressure to prove you are worth the cost – In a small business every puzzle piece has to fit. If you can’t prove you are worth the money, save the business money or generate revenue. You are out the door.

To conclude weather you are the employee of a small business or the owner. There are a lot of pressures in play when use real money to self-start a real business. If you look to fit in to the small business culture prove you are a good investment, keep up at the job and prove you are worth every dime in your new job. If you don’t you will just be the guy who used to work for the small business company.
