I also am promoting a dog walking service on Kijiji again. I want to manage my own clients on weekends and after 5:00pm Monday – Friday. Rates are up for negotiation but I am looking for at least a minimum wage compensation.

I also ordered some new boxing gloves on Amazon.ca , despite my disinterest with the website related to their “Pay to sell” format. I just needed to acquire the gloves for my Tuesday Kickboxing classes at Seneca Newnham Campus.

I am moving my return to Facebook back until after the Seneca Teacher strike is completed since I really haven’t had any work on social media in quite some time. However readers, friends & family can still reach out to me through Whatsapp. My phone number is 647-850-6802.

What does film tell us about politics?

Watch Last King of Scotland on Google Play

Ashton Deroy Writes: Film is an art-form by which we can reflect life, society & power. Often in film we look at power dynamics of different forms of government. Whether this government is a democracy, a dictatorship or Monarchy. Film allows us to examine the forum of government as an art.

Side note: The Last King of Scotland is an absolutely atrocious film, I do not believe it captures Idi Amin correctly as a sociopath & a proven serial killer. If someone such as the doctor portrayed in the film had done something to personally insult him, if he had gotten ahold of that person he would of personally killed them. No way he would of gotten away.

When looking at the Last King Of Scotland what can this film tell the viewer about Politics in Uganda? Well the movie is really a creative retelling of Idi Amin a ruthless, delusional & eccentric dictator who was responsible for the slaughter of 500,000 people. What this film can really teach about politics? Well it teaches that is dangerous when there is no limitation placed on leadership. Idi Amin was supposed to restore democracy to Uganda but with his massive unchecked power he was able to to keep his power to himself from 1971-1979.

Idi Amin’s unchecked power could go back as far as his military days. From when he served as a soldier and was accused of using excessive force on missions. This was followed by his ruthless overthrow of the government. Then systematic killings of Milton Obote supporters, Israeli people and throwing Asians out of the country of Uganda.

The film in a way misrepresents the public’s reaction to Amin. The feeling in general towards him was not being beloved by the public. There was dancing in the street when he had taken over. However History.com mentions the public coining the phrase Aminism referring to the brutal enforcement of law &  massacres ordered by Idi Amin. There are stories of him dragging women out of post-secondary schools from certain tribes. It was these atrocities which really have him considered the worst dictator of this century. Not just by outside observation but by many Ugandan people to.

The film allowed us to see a film portrayal of how Idi Amin treated his wives, how his regime was one of terror. However what it didn’t show enough of was the cannibalism, the grotesque display of bodies on the street & the spill of blood for political gain. There was no limitation of Idi Amin’s power in Uganda for his 8 year leadership, until the failed invasion of Tanzania. In the film you got to see the Doctor as a possible power check with the assignment of his assassination. However with the refusal to do the do the job there was no limitation placed on Idi Amin. Which proves the danger of limitless power in a government.

“Idi Amin.” Biography.com, 27 Apr. 2017, http://www.biography.com/people/idi-amin-9183487. Accessed 24 Sept. 2017. This biography provided information on the leadership of Idi Amin in Uganda. It captures the eccentric behavior, self appointed titles & his death. Unlike the film it does highlight on any public enthusiasm about his new leadership, in fact he had a developed reputation for capturing and torturing people. It also highlights Amin’s use of excessive force, the staged coo and takeover of Uganda. This biography also highlights his estimated kill count of over 500,000.

“Idi Amin: Violent Ugandan President – Fast Facts | History.” History.com, 16 Mar. 2016, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvVIkXPvp-4. Accessed 24 Sept. 2017. This documentary discusses the brutal dictator Idi Amin. It covers his journey from being a cook, to a soldier & the development of his bad reputation. It covers the attack of King Baganda during his military career ordered by the prime minister. Then the coo staged Idi Amin to Milton Obote that started off non-violent, but would turn violent towards Milton Obote’s supporters. This article can help to prove that Idi Amin had unchecked power because in modern North American military someone who tortured prisoners and used excessive force would be held accountable.

Sassy City Girl reviews, Orphan Black. Watch it now on Crave TV. Tracy Gerhardt’s Love Winx Page.

Orphan Black .png

Orphan Black is a Canadian sci-fi TV series filmed mostly in Toronto. The fifth and final season started on June 10, 2017. I first came across this show in 2014 and it’s been my favorite ever since. It examines moral issues around cloning, has great characters, and is constantly surprising me. I’m sad that it’s ending, but I have seen what happens to shows that get dragged out so they keep airing. Besides, it will be an amazing season if the first episode was any indication.

Orphan Black centers around a group of female clones all played by Tatiana Maslany. The series opens with con-artist Sarah Manning witnessing a woman commit suicide. She notices that Beth Childs looks exactly like her and steals her purse. She meets several of her clones soon after. At first, Sarah is only interested in Beth’s money, but she grows to care about her sisters. They are fighting threats from the extremely religious Proletheans and the science institute DYAD. A few of the clones also develop a

A few of the clones also develop a mysterious life-threatening illness. The show examines the moral implications of cloning as well as how it affects each sister’s identity. Other clones include soccer mom Alison, scientist Cosima, Ukrainian assassin Helena, and “pro clone” Rachel. Each one has her own personality and struggles.

Sometimes I find it hard to believe they are all portrayed by the same actress. Maslany is extremely talented, doing many different accents flawlessly. The non-clone characters are fantastic as well. Sarah’s biological daughter Kira is very precocious and senses when things are not right. Her foster brother Felix and mother Siobhan have strong personalities yet are very loving. Cosima’s girlfriend Delphine does whatever she feels is best for her even if it compromises their relationship. Alison’s husband Donnie often provides much needed comic relief. I recall a scene where he accidentally killed an antagonist and I couldn’t help laughing.

Another thing that makes the show amazing is unexpected plot twists. I didn’t like Helena in the first season. However, she turned out to have a soft side and is now one of my favorites. Certain characters turn out to have hidden motives or be more involved in the conspiracy than I thought. The genetic original was not who I was expecting at all. There are many emotional moments. One scene in season four had me crying harder than I ever have during a TV show. I even tweeted that I wished I could kill a certain antagonist. However, there are many heartwarming moments too. I really enjoyed the ending of season three where several clones were having dinner together and reminiscing about recent events.

If you have not seen Orphan Black, I highly recommend it. The show deals with moral issues of cloning, has amazing characters with strong bonds, and always surprises you. New episodes air every Saturday at 10 PM on Space and are available on space.ca soon after. Past seasons can be watched on Crave TV. I am excited to see what transpires during the rest of the final season.

The validity of Content Marketing & website information systems.

Seneca Library Macy's case study.png

If you were ever curious about who helped Macy find their digital marketing success for 2015. Look no further than Madras, the company has basically validated the effectiveness with their results for the digital marketing campaign for Macy’s in the United States and why it is important for a company to outsource  (hire external from the company)  digital marketing jobs. Why does this excite me? It validates Marketing beyond just sales generation.

The Marketing agency executed the web listings for 300,000 products, executed delivery of 3,000 creative units, managed 100,000 assets on Macys.com CMS and maintained 15,000 search engine landing pages. This information proves the importance of setting up website information systems opposed to website advertising systems which only record short bits of information to generate quick sales or lead foot traffic to a store.

“Macy’s Case Study.” Seneca Libraries. N.p., n.d. Web. 15 May 2017. <Seneca Libraries database>. Macy’s Case study reveals results for their Content Management system campaign, digital marketing & digital selling. The article discusses how through the Content management campaign they were able to get 15,000 pieces of Macy’s content indexed in search engines. Basically, Madras took the brand from the digital perspective and made it a high functioning machine for their digital channels including social media, website blog, Search engine indexes & video content.

Perceptual map of the cosmetics industry.

Perceptual map of makeup industry.png

Written by Diana Skye

This is a perceptual map of popular beauty brands. The further to the right a brand is, the higher the quality of their products. The higher up a brand is, the more expensive they are.

Bottom Left: Wallet-friendly brands with low-quality products

Elf: One of the least expensive makeup brands. While they have some good products, the quality is very hit and miss. I have bad experiences with their eye shadow and brushes. However, I did like the brow kit.

Colourpop: An online-only brand made popular by social media. I have not tried them but seen many reviews on their products. Their first launch of matte liquid lipsticks got very negative reviews, being compared to nail polish on your lips. On the other hand, the satin liquid lipsticks were well received.

Reviews: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VCF40kxhJo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrhcu6sVAGQ

Coastal Scents: They started out making large eye shadow palettes, but have since branched out into other products. I used the shimmer palette several years ago. While I liked the variety of shades, some colors worked better than others. Also, there was a lot of glitter fallout.

Bottom Right: Wallet-friendly brands with high-quality products

Wet N Wild: Not only is Wet N Wild very affordable, the quality is comparable to high-end brands. I always say that if you need an inexpensive neutral palette, get Comfort Zone. It has eight high-quality shadows for less than $5. Their lip and cheek products are also very good.

Nyx: Nyx has one of the best color selections I have seen for eye and lip products. I am seldom disappointed by what I try from them. They have expanded quite a bit as there are now Nyx stores in Canada.

Top Left: High-end brands with low-quality products

Kylie Cosmetics: I refuse to buy from Kylie Cosmetics and not just because I dislike the Kardashians. They are owned by the same brand as Colourpop. The lip kits are very similar, but more than double the price. Also, they have had issues with quality control, such as nearly empty liquid lipsticks.

Reviews: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfJS4AeesAU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxZGf4WoZew

Too Faced: While Too Faced used to be one of my favorite brands, the quality has gone downhill in the past year and a half. The peach line is very inconsistent and a brow product was released in only two shades. The last new release I enjoyed was the Bon Bon’s palette.

Top right: High-end brands with high-quality products

Pixi: Pixi specializes in high-quality natural products. In addition to makeup, there are a lot of skin care products. While it’s available at Target or Shoppers Drug Mart, the prices are higher than drugstore brands. However, I would recommend their skin care to anyone who does not want to splurge on brands at Sephora.

Urban Decay: My first high-end purchase was from Urban Decay and I have loved them every since. Their palettes are well loved for a good reason since they have one of the best eyeshadow formulas. They also make my favorite face highlighter and have over a hundred shades of lipstick.

Kat Von D beauty: This brand was started by the artist of the same name. I have yet to buy a product I dislike from Kat Von D beauty. While the products are expensive, I feel they are worth the money. The liquid lipsticks are my favorite formula.

Should Toronto Pride 2017 lose their grant over police scandal?

Should Toronto Pride lose their grant-.png

This is a reply to CP24

Fox, Chrs. “LGBTQ officers call on city to cut annual grant given to Pride.” CP 24. N.p., 19 Apr. 2017. Web. 30 Apr. 2017. <Should Pride lose their grant? CP24 Article >. This article is a reply to the CP24 article on LGBTQ officers coming out to saying the city should cut funding to Toronto Pride over discontinuing the OPP float. The article goes on to mention that the organization is given a $260,000 grant for Pride. The article states that the police feel it is unacceptable the stance the Toronto Pride has taken with the police force & the article discusses the details of the organization giving in to a radical organization.

Ashton Deroy writes: Something needs to happen about the wrong moves being made with Toronto Pride in 2016/2017. Weather it is removing the board, getting better members or someone from the city leveraging power, saying give the police a float or lose this power. Yes something should happen!

Should they lose a $260,000 grant though? That is tough to say. What is the grant for? If the grant is for funding a massive tourism attraction. No Toronto Pride should not lose this grant. However if the grant is to allow for involvement from the province, city & etc at all capacities in the parade. Yes the grant should be revoked from Toronto Pride.

Grant purpose– The grant is setup as a cultural attractions grant for tourism. So no the grant should not be pulled from Toronto Pride. It is unfortunate that this will not be what the police force is able to leverage but I do encourage them to continue to speak up about their disliking for Pride’s treatment towards them in 2016-2017.

As far as the grant goes, I doubt Toronto is going to axe this grant as there are massive cultural benefits to the city from being able to have this event every year.

So are you unhappy about the lack of solidarity between Pride & the Police force? I demand passionate readers contact Toronto Pride & speak up about this issue.

Why I hate crappy web designer apps like Wixx & WebFlow

WebFlow.png

Ashton Deroy, is a web Marketing expert who attends Seneca College for Business & Marketing. He is a graduate of St. Lawrence College’s interactive Marketing program and Loyalist College’s Creative Advertising program.

Ashton Deroy Writes:

Okay yes hiring engineers to do websites unless you are willing to spend $1000+ is garbage. I still hate these services like Webflow and WIXX! Why do I hate them? These services target average users, who create bad looking projects and who are never properly trained to use the software to its optimum use!

Why do I hate them? it is because of this idealization “Lets give morons the capability to be designers. then let them execute a sloppy ass website that won’t meet their promotion objectives, won’t meet their goals and oh yeah not a single person will consult with them who is an expert making the website stupid as hell!”

Then there is more dumb shit that comes from these software tools as well. Not only do you get morons making lame ass websites, they also miss the following essential features for executing web marketing campaigns.

  • Marketing dashboard- Where do you measure your key performance indicators? Where are you going to measure website bounce, what content is attracting traffic versus really bad content. All blogs should be setup on WordPress for the dashboard alone.
• Social media integration – Sharing options for posts to Facebook. Calls to action to increase social media followings and a funnel for potential leads.
  • Lead retrieval
  • SEO writing tools (Most stupid over priced websites are missing this)
  • Tag use – Where is the conversation happening? A Tag is like your Walkies talkie channel. You choose a frequency where your messaging can occur.
  • Traffic generation strategy– People set up these design websites that are stationary in traffic and think they will make them money. The idea is stupid as hell! Websites generate their traffic  from Social media, Search engines and printed promotion.

Why I use WordPress

I used to use a dumb ass engineer named Rick Wirthlin! The guy had no people skills and I was worse off pay $500 for one of his websites than paying $460 for one of my own.

Why do I use WordPress?

  • Informational website setups
  • Built in traffic system
  • Tags to have conversations in
  • The SEO Writing tool
  • WordPress websites rank higher than customs
  • Attracting Press attention
  • Easy E Commerce integration
  • All the tools I need for website operation in one convenient place.
